The line was chartered as the Spartanburg and Asheville Railroad in 1873〔(Annual report of the Board of Railroad Commissioners of North Carolina, 1893, page 215 )〕 and the following year it was consolidated with the Greenville and French Broad Railroad, a North Carolina line.〔(Open Jurist, Commissioners of Buncombe Co v.
